Hot Springs, Arkansas Drug Abuse Info

Filed under: Media Reports — admin @ 10:11 am

Hot Springs, Arkansas has a population of 35,193 and a crime index of 1 – 100 being the safest.  If you lived in Arkansas you would have a 1 in 197 chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime and if you lived in Hot Springs, Arkansas you would have a 1 in 87 chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime.  The FBI collects information from 17,000 local law enforcements agencies and that is where they get the figures for these statements.  In the last year Hot Springs has had 7 murders, 22 rapes, 72 robberies and 301 assaults.  For every one thousand resident there are 100 of them that will be a victim.  Hot Springs has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes.  According to Hot Springs is number 60 in the top 100 most dangerous cities to live in. reports that state agencies had a  meeting in Little Rock for a Prescription Drug Summit.  Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel said, “Our state has historically had one of the largest problems of prescription drug abuse – especially by children – of anywhere in the nation,  By the time Arkansas high school students have reached their senior year roughly one in five have abused prescription drugs.  Over the past three years, youth abuse rates have dropped and we are working to continue this welcome trend.  Arkansas has conducted three successful prescription drug take back events that have yielded over twelve tons of no-longer-needed medications from family medicine cabinets in Arkansas.”

These are the kinds of things that were discussed at the summit.  It seems that prescription drug abuse is a growing problem in Arkansas and this problem is affecting the children, friends and neighbors.  It is discussed that neglecting to get rid of our old pills is one of the ways to make the problem worse.  It is also noted that that is only the beginning.

Skip Mooney speaks from experience because his son battled with addition.  Mooney said, “During one of his high school games he had a concussion and he started having anxiety attacks and panic attacks.  The doctor prescribed medicine to help with the attacks and that’s when the problem began.  The medicine wasn’t really working for him, so by the time he got to college he found the medicine that helped him with the panic attacks is hydrocodone and Xanax.  It’s absolutely horrible; when he came to us he couldn’t go without withdrawals for more than three days.” I hope that this kid got help from one of the Hot Springs drug rehabs.

This kind of thing is going on with close to 10 percent of today’s seniors.  They are using prescription drugs for non medical reason.  This is a problem and McDaniel attributes that to the convenience with unused prescriptions sitting in the medicine cabinet.  “You are placing them at risk of being stolen or taken by your children or grandchildren or their friends.  They find their way to the streets from the most innocent of sources and they are poisoning our children.” No wonder that rehabs in Louisiana, Arkansas, and all across the south are full of Oxy addicts.

That is the way the summit went in Arkansas.  They are addressing the drug problem there.  If you know someone who wants to get off drugs get them to an inpatient treatment center or one of the inhalant abuse rehabs where they can get safe and natural ways to detox and withdraw.  Something can be done about it.
